3 Design and Function
3.1 Function description
The QS3 sample changer can be used in conjunction with the Q3 dosing module and can be installed on any
XPR analytical balance. It contains 30 dosing positions (15 when used with sample vessels of diameter
larger than 31.5mm), and therefore provides increased throughput of your dosing activities. The sample
changer can be used to dose liquids as well as powders. The dosing positions are covered by a tunnel draft
shield with two handles, on the right and left side of the weighing chamber. The top door of the balance is
replaced by a top panel especially designed to reduce the influence of air drafts on the weighing results.
Various adapter are available to accommodate a high variety of sample vessels. The vessels with adapters are
placed on the racks, which are in turn installed on the rotating drive ring. Each dosing position is numbered for
easy traceability. When dosing starts, the drive ring rotates and the dosing positions are brought one-by-one
over the weighing pan for dosing.
Simple weighings, adjustments, and tests can still be performed when the sample changer is installed. To this
purpose, a weighing pan cover and a weighing basket are provided with the instrument.
3.2 Overview
See the section "Overview" (graphics and legend) at the very beginning of this manual.
6 QS3 Sample Changer
3.3 Components description
Weighing pan and rail
A rail is fixed to the base ring. All adapters and sample
vessels slide on this rail as the drive ring rotates. The rail has
one gap above the weighing pan. When a sample vessel
reaches this position, its weight hangs on the weighing pan,
allowing weighing/dosing.
Drive ring
The drive ring is the rotating component of the sample
changer. It contains six elongated slots to fit six racks, each
with five dosing positions. The drive ring also presents a
single round hole, the Home position, where simple
weighing, adjustments, and tests can be performed. When
the Home position is not used for weighing, cover the hole
using the Home position cover.
The rotation of the drive ring is provided by a motor and a
driving wheel, located at the rear of the sample changer.
Racks for sample vessels
The racks are used to hold the adapters (each containing a
sample vessel). Up to six racks can fit on the sample
changer, each with five dosing positions. Each position is
numbered to allow dosing traceability.
en
7QS3 Sample Changer
Home position cover
The Home position cover is designed to avoid unwanted
powder on the weighing pan. Whenever possible, cover the
hole of the Home position with the Home position cover.
Weighing pan cover
When performing a simple weighing, adjustment, or test, you
can use the weighing pan cover in the Home position.
If the drive ring rotates while the weighing pan cover or the
weighing basket is installed, the sample changer or the load
cell could be damaged. Always remove the weighing pan
cover or the weighing basket as soon as the operation is
completed. Place back the Home position cover.
Weighing basket
When using small weights that need to be positioned
precisely in the middle of the weighing pan, use the weighing
basket in the Home position.
If the drive ring rotates while the weighing pan cover or the
weighing basket is installed, the sample changer or the load
cell could be damaged. Always remove the weighing pan
cover or the weighing basket as soon as the operation is
completed. Place back the Home position cover.
8 QS3 Sample Changer
Tunnel
To minimize the influence of air draft on the weighing, a
tunnel is enclosing the weighing chamber and the drive ring
holding the racks and sample vessels. The racks can be
accessed by simply sliding tunnel on the right or left side of
the weighing chamber.
Top panel
The top panel of the QS3 sample changer is designed to
minimize the air draft in the weighing chamber.
4 Installation and Putting into Operation
This instrument must be installed by a METTLER TOLEDO service technician.
The QS3 sample changer is compatible with all XPR analytical balances with tall draft shield.
4.1 Selecting the location
A balance is a sensitive precision instrument. The location where it is placed will have a profound effect on the
accuracy of the weighing results.
