2.1 Definitions of signal words and warning symbols

Responsibilities of the instrument owner
The instrument owner is the person holding the legal title to the instrument and who uses the instrument or
authorizes any person to use it, or the person who is deemed by law to be the operator of the instrument. The
instrument owner is responsible for the safety of all users of the instrument and third parties.
Mettler-Toledo GmbH assumes that the instrument owner trains users to safely use the instrument in their
workplace and deal with potential hazards. Mettler-Toledo GmbH assumes that the instrument owner provides
the necessary protective gear.

3 Function
3.1 Function description
The MCP-R pipette calibration module can be added to compatible balances to perform volumetric calibration
of single and multichannel pipettes. It can contain 12 pipetting tanks that are placed inside the module. The
MCP-R pipette calibration module has a removable evaporation trap door on top that keeps liquids from evapo-
rating during measurements and reduces influences from the outside.
The balance with the installed MCP-R pipette calibration module is connected to a computer with the specific
Calibry software installed that initiates the calibration process and collects all the data. When a calibration is
initiated, the user opens the evaporation trap door and pipettes the required volume into each tank. The tanks
are weighed successively and the data is collected for the evaluation of the pipettes.

The Calibry software is not part of the delivery and can be purchased optionally, see [Accessories
Page20].

4.1 Selecting the location
The MCP-R pipette calibration module is a sensitive precision instrument. The location of use has a profound
effect on the accuracy of the weighing results.
Requirements of the location
Place indoors on stable
table

4.3 Installing the MCP-R pipette calibration module on the balance
This instrument must be installed by a METTLER TOLEDO service technician.
5 Operation
5.1 Filling the evaporation trap
The evaporation trap includes two elongated recesses that should be filled with water. When the evaporation
trap is closed, the humidity inside increases until the air is saturated. This prevents evaporation of the liquid in
the pipetting tanks and ensures accurate weighing results.
The evaporation trap door is closed.
1 Press the button to remove the cover.
2 Fill both recesses, each with a maximum of 8 mL of
distilled water.
Note
In the event of an overflow, the water will drain outside
the instrument onto the underlying surface.
3 Place the cover and slightly press it down until it snaps
in.
4 Wait at least 120 minutes to allow the air in the evapo-
ration trap to reach saturation.
5.2 Performing a pipette calibration
For further information, consult the Reference Manual of the connected balance and the Operating
Instructions of the Calibry software.

According to ISO8655-6:2022, the readability of the balance should correspond to the nominal pipette volume
to be tested. The readability can be set in the tolerance profile of the method.
For more details about specific balance settings for pipette calibration, refer to the Reference Manual of the
balance.
The 12 pipetting tanks have a capacity of 17 mL each. They must be emptied regularly to avoid an overflow,
especially when calibrating pipettes with a larger volume (> 200 µL).
For performing a pipette calibration, a computer with the Calibry software installed is needed. The Calibry
software leads the user through the pipette calibration. The following steps explain the handling of the MCP-R
pipette calibration module while performing a pipette calibration.
8 Pipette Calibration Module
The evaporation trap is filled.
The evaporation trap door has been closed for at least 120 minutes, allowing the air in the evaporation trap
to reach saturation.
The balance is connected to a computer with the Calibry software installed.
An appropriate tolerance profile is selected.

2 Carefully pipette the required volume into the pipetting

Note
In the event of an overflow, remove the excess liquid
immediately, see [Cleaning after an overflow

3 Close the evaporation trap door (3).
4 Follow the instructions in the Calibry software.
5 Wait until all the pipetting tanks are weighed.
The weighing results are shown on the terminal
display.
6 Repeat the procedure until the Calibry software indicates
that the calibration process is finished.
Note
The results can be evaluated in the Calibry software.
5.3 Performing a test
For further information, consult the Reference Manual of the connected balance and the Operating
Instructions of the Calibry software.
5.3.1 Performance test or sensitivity test
The balance software leads the user through the test. The following steps explain the preparation of the MCP-R
pipette calibration module for the test.
Note
Performance test: METTLER TOLEDO recommends using OIML/ASTM test weights between 1g and 20g.

Sensitivity test: METTLER TOLEDO recommends using an OIML/ASTM test weight of 100g.

5.3.2 Positioning test
For performing the positioning test, a computer with the Calibry software installed is needed. The Calibry
software leads the user through the test. The following steps show how to use the height checking tool.

The upper end of the spring blades must be between the two tolerance lines (3). This applies to both
sides.

6 Maintenance
To guarantee the functionality of the instrument and the accuracy of the weighing results, a number of

6.2 Emptying the containers
The pipetting tanks and the evaporation trap can be emptied manually or with the help of a pump.
Note
The pump is not part of the delivery and can be purchased optionally, see [Accessories Page20].
6.2.1 Emptying the containers manually
6.2.1.1 Emptying the pipetting tanks
1 Remove the evaporation trap door.
2 Press the button to remove the cover.
3 Remove the pipetting tanks one by one with tweezers.
4 With tweezers, carefully pull out the glass tubes from the pipetting tanks.
5 Over a container suitable for liquid waste, turn the pipetting tanks upside down and drain out the water.
6 Dry the glass tubes and the pipetting tanks.
7 Insert the glass tubes into the pipetting tanks.
8 Insert the pipetting tanks into the holder for pipetting tanks.
The pipetting tanks are empty.
6.2.1.2 Emptying the evaporation trap
An absorbing sponge is usually sufficient to empty the evaporation trap.
1 Remove the evaporation trap door.
2 Press the button to remove the cover.
3 With a sponge, remove the liquid in the evaporation trap recesses.
The evaporation trap is empty.

6.2.2.1 Assembling the pump

NOTICE
Damage to the pump due to inappropriate handling
If the pump is switched on when it is not in use, it can get damaged.
Switch off the pump when it is not in use.
During normal usage, the pipetting tanks and the evaporation trap recesses contain water. The pump serves to
remove the water in a safe and efficient manner, without having to disassemble the instrument. The inlet tubing
has a metallic tube attached for easier handling. The outlet tubing serves to dispose of the aspirated liquid.

1 Install the cables in such a way that they cannot be
damaged or interfere with operation.
2 Insert the plug of the AC/DC adapter (1) into the power
socket.
3 Secure the plug by firmly tightening the knurled nut.
4 Insert the plug of the power cable into a grounded power
outlet that is easily accessible.
5 Connect the tubing with the metallic tube (2) to the
nozzle IN (3).
6 Connect the other tubing to the nozzle OUT (4).
7 Place the free end of the tubing into a container suitable for liquid waste (5).
6.2.2.2 Emptying the pipetting tanks
The pump is assembled.
The outlet tubing is placed in a container suitable for liquid waste.
1 Open the evaporation trap door.
2 Place the metallic tube inside one pipetting tank.
3 Switch on the pump.
The liquid is pumped out and collected in the container for liquid waste.
4 Switch off the pump.
5 Repeat this procedure for the other pipetting tanks.
The pipetting tanks are empty.
6.2.2.3 Emptying the evaporation trap
The pump is assembled.
The outlet tubing is placed in a container suitable for liquid waste.
1 Remove the evaporation trap door.
2 Press the button to remove the cover.

3 Place the metallic tube into one elongated recess of the evaporation trap.
4 Switch on the pump.
The liquid is pumped out and collected in the container for liquid waste.
5 Switch off the pump.
6 Repeat this procedure for the other elongated recess of the evaporation trap.
The evaporation trap is empty.
6.3 Disassembling for cleaning
The containers are empty, see [Emptying the containers Page12].
The connected balance is disconnected from the power supply.

NOTICE
Damage to the instrument due to inappropriate cleaning methods
If liquid enters the housing, it can damage the instrument. The surface of the instrument can be
damaged by certain cleaning agents, solvents, or abrasives.
1 Do not spray or pour liquid on the instrument.
2 Only use the cleaning agents specified in the Reference Manual (RM) of the instrument or the
guide "8 Steps to a Clean Balance".
3 Only use a lightly moistened, lint-free cloth or a tissue to clean the instrument.
4 Wipe off any spills immediately.
6.4.1 Cleaning the instrument
Cleaning around the instrument
Remove any dirt or dust around the instrument and avoid further contaminations.
Cleaning removable parts
Clean the removed part with a damp cloth or a tissue and a mild cleaning agent.
Cleaning not removable parts
1 Disconnect the connected balance from the AC/DC adapter.
2 Use a lint-free cloth moistened with a mild cleaning agent to clean the surface of the instrument.
3 Remove powder or dust with a disposable tissue first.
4 Remove sticky substances with a damp lint-free cloth and a mild solvent, e.g., isopropanol or ethanol
70%.
6.4.2 Cleaning after an overflow
In the event of an overflow, for example when overfilling the pipetting tanks, excess liquid must be removed
immediately.
1 If needed, empty the pipetting tanks, see Emptying the pipetting tanks.
2 Disassemble the remaining items.
3 Clean the items with a lint-free cloth or tissue, see [Disassembling for cleaning Page14].
4 Reassemble the instrument.
6.5 Putting into operation after cleaning
