Safety instructions
General power tool safety warnings
@
Warning! Read all safety warnings and all
instructions. Failure to follow the warnings and
instructions listed below may result in electric
shock, re and/or serious injury.
Save all warnings and instructions for future reference.
The term "power tool" in the warnings refers to your mains
operated (corded) power tool or battery operated (cordless)
power tool.
1. Work area safety
a. Keep work area clean and well lit. Cluttered or dark
areas invite accidents.
b. Do not operate power tools in explosive atmospheres,
such as in the presence of ammable liquids, gases
or dust. Power tools create sparks which may ignite the
dust or fumes.
c. Keep children and bystanders away while operating a
power tool. Distractions can cause you to lose control.
2. Electrical safety
a. Power tool plugs must match the outlet. Never modify
the plug in any way. Do not use any adapter plugs
with earthed (grounded) power tools. Unmodied plugs
and matching outlets will reduce risk of electric shock.
b. Avoid body contact with earthed or grounded
surfaces such as pipes, radiators, ranges and
refrigerators. There is an increased risk of electric shock
if your body is earthed or grounded.
c. Do not expose power tools to rain or wet conditions.
Water entering a power tool will increase the risk of
electric shock.
d. Do not abuse the cord. Never use the cord for
carrying, pulling or unplugging the power tool. Keep
cord away from heat, oil, sharp edges or moving
parts. Damaged or entangled cords increase the risk of
electric shock.
e. When operating a power tool outdoors, use an
extension cord suitable for outdoor use. Use of a cord
suitable for outdoor use reduces the risk of electric shock.
f. If operating a power tool in a damp location is
unavoidable, use a residual current device (RCD)
protected supply.
Use of an RCD reduces the risk of electric shock.
3. Personal safety
a. Stay alert, watch what you are doing and use common
sense when operating a power tool. Do not use a
power tool while you are tired or under the inuence
of drugs, alcohol or medication. A moment of inattention
while operating power tools may result in serious personal
injury.
b. Use personal protective equipment. Always wear eye
protection. Protective equipment such as dust mask,
non-skid safety shoes, hard hat, or hearing protection
used for appropriate conditions will reduce personal
injuries.
c. Prevent unintentional starting. Ensure the switch is in
the off-position before connecting to power source
and/or battery pack, picking up or carrying the tool.
Carrying power tools with your nger on the switch or
energising power tools that have the switch on invites
accidents.
d. Remove any adjusting key or wrench before turning
the power tool on. A wrench or a key left attached to a
rotating part of the power tool may result in personal injury.
e. Do not overreach. Keep proper footing and balance at
all times. This enables better control of the power tool in
unexpected situations.
f. Dress properly. Do not wear loose clothing or
jewellery. Keep your hair, clothing and gloves away
from moving parts. Loose clothes, jewellery or long hair
can be caught in moving parts.
g. If devices are provided for the connection of dust
extraction and collection facilities, ensure these are
connected and properly used. Use of dust collection can
reduce dust-related hazards.
4. Power tool use and care
a. Do not force the power tool. Use the correct power
5
ENGLISH
tool for your application. The correct power tool will do
the job better and safer at the rate for which it was
designed.
b. Do not use the power tool if the switch does not turn it
on and off. Any power tool that cannot be controlled with
the switch is dangerous and must be repaired.
c. Disconnect the plug from the power source and/or the
battery pack from the power tool before making any
adjustments, changing accessories, or storing power
tools. Such preventive safety measures reduce the risk of
starting the power tool accidentally.
d. Store idle power tools out of the reach of children and
do not allow persons unfamiliar with the power tool or
these instructions to operate the power tool. Power
tools are dangerous in the hands of untrained users.
e. Maintain power tools. Check for misalignment or
binding of moving parts, breakage of parts and any
other condition that may affect the power tools
operation. If damaged, have the power tool repaired
before use. Many accidents are caused by poorly
maintained power tools.
f. Keep cutting tools sharp and clean. Properly
maintained cutting tools with sharp cutting edges are less
likely to bind and are easier to control.
g. Use the power tool, accessories and tool bits etc. In
accordance with these instructions, taking into
account the working conditions and the work to be
performed. Use of the power tool for operations different
from those intended could result in a hazardous situation.
5. Battery tool use and care
a. Recharge only with the charger specied by the
manufacturer. A charger that is suitable for one type of
battery pack may create a risk of re when used with
another battery pack.
b. Use power tools only with specically designated
battery packs. Use of any other battery packs may create
a risk of injury and re.
c. When battery pack is not in use, keep it away from
other metal objects, like paper clips, coins, keys,
nails, screws, or other small metal objects, that can
make a connection from one terminal to another.
Shorting the battery terminals together may cause burns
or a re.
d. Under abusive conditions, liquid may be ejected from
the battery; avoid contact. If contact accidentally
occurs, ush with water. If liquid contacts eyes,
additionally seek medical help. Liquid ejected from the
battery may cause irritation or burns.
6. Service
a. Have your power tool serviced by a qualied repair
person using only identical replacement parts. This
will ensure that the safety of the power tool is maintained.
Additional power tool safety warnings
@
Warning! Additional safety warnings for hedge
trimmers
u Keep all parts of the body away from the cutter blade.
Do not remove cut material or hold material to be cut
when blades are moving. Make sure the switch is off
when clearing jammed material. A moment of inattention
while operating the tool can result in serious personal
injury.
u Carry the hedge trimmer by the handle with the cutter
blade stopped. When transporting or storing the
hedge trimmer always t the cutting device cover.
Proper handling of the hedge trimmer will reduce possible
personal injury from the cutter blades.
u Hold the power tool by insulated gripping surfaces
only, because the cutter blade may contact hidden
wiring. Cutter blades contacting a "live" wire may make
exposed metal parts of the power tool "live" and could give
the operator an electric shock.
u The intended use is described in this instruction manual.
The use of any accessory or attachment or performance
of any operation with this tool other than those
recommended in this instruction manual can present a risk
of personal injury and/or damage to property.
u Do not carry the tool with your hands on the front handle,
switch or the trigger switch unless the battery has been
removed.
u If you have not used a hedge trimmer before, preferably
seek practical instruction by an experienced user in
addition to studying this manual.
u Never touch the blades while the tool is running.
u Never attempt to force the blades to come to a standstill.
u Do not put the tool down until the blades have come to a
complete standstill.
u Regularly check the blades for damage and wear. Do not
use the tool when the blades are damaged.
u Take care to avoid hard objects (e.g. metal wire, railings)
when trimming. Should you accidentally hit any such
object, immediately switch the tool off and check for any
damage.
u Should the tool start to vibrate abnormally, immediately
switch it off and remove the battery then check for any
damage.
u If the tool stalls, immediately switch it off. Remove the
battery before attempting to remove any obstructions.
u After use, place the blade sheath supplied over the
blades. Store the tool, making sure that the blade is not
exposed.

mental capabilities, or lack of experience and knowledge,
unless they have been given supervision or instruction
concerning use of the appliance by a person responsible
for their safety.
u Children should be supervised to ensure that they do not
play with the appliance.
Residual risks.
Additional residual risks may arise when using the tool which
may not be included in the enclosed safety warnings. These
risks can arise from misuse, prolonged use etc.
Even with the application of the relevant safety regulations
and the implementation of safety devices, certain residual
risks can not be avoided. These include:
u Injuries caused by touching any rotating/moving parts.
u Injuries caused when changing any parts, blades or
accessories.

Charging procedure
Black+decker chargers are designed to charge Black+decker
battery packs.
u Plug the charger into an appropriate outlet before inserting
the battery pack.
u Insert the battery pack into the charger as shown in
gure A.
u The green LED will ash indicating that the battery is
being charged.
u The completion of charge is indicated by the green LED
remaining on continuously. The pack is fully charged and
may be used at this time or left on the charger.
Note: Recharge discharged batteries as soon as possible
after use or battery life may be greatly diminished. For longest
battery life, do not discharge batteries fully. It is recommended
that the batteries be recharged after each use.
Leaving the battery in the charger
The charger and battery pack can be left connected with the
LED glowing indenitely. The charger will keep the battery
pack fresh and fully charged.
Important charging notes
u Longest life and best performance can be obtained if
the battery pack is charged when the air temperature is
between 65°F and 75°F (18°- 24°C). DO NOT charge the
battery pack in an air temperature below +40°F (+4.5°C),
or above +105°F (+40.5°C). This is important and will
prevent serious damage to the battery pack.
u The charger and battery pack may become warm to touch
while charging. This is a normal condition, and does not
indicate a problem. To facilitate the cooling of the battery
pack after use, avoid placing the charger or battery pack
in a warm environment such as in a metal shed, or an
uninsulated trailer.
u If the battery pack does not charge properly:
u Check current at receptacle by plugging in a lamp or
other appliance.
u Check to see if receptacle is connected to a light switch
which turns power off when you turn out the lights.
u Move charger and battery pack to a location where the
surrounding air temperature is approximately 65°F
- 75°F (18°- 24°C).
u If charging problems persist, take the tool, battery pack
and charger to your local service center.
u The battery pack should be recharged when it fails to
produce sufcient power on jobs which were easily done
previously. DO NOT CONTINUE to use under these
conditions. Follow the charging procedure. You may also
charge a partially used pack whenever you desire with no
adverse affect on the battery pack.
u Foreign materials of a conductive nature such as, but
not limited to, steel wool, aluminium foil, or any buildup
of metallic particles should be kept away from charger
cavities. Always unplug the charger from the power supply
when there is no battery pack in the cavity. Unplug charger
before attempting to clean.
u Do not freeze or immerse charger in water or any other
liquid.
Warning! Do not allow any liquid to get inside charger. Never
attempt to open the battery pack for any reason. If the plastic
housing of the battery pack breaks or cracks, return to a
service center for recycling.
Installing and removing the battery pack from the
tool
Warning! Make certain the lock-off button is engaged to
prevent switch actuation before removing or installing battery.
To install battery pack
u Insert battery (8) into tool until an audible click is heard
(Figure. B)
u Ensure battery pack is fully seated and fully latched into
position.
To remove battery pack
u Depress the battery release button as shown in gure C
and pull battery pack out of tool.
Assembly instructions
Warning! Make certain the battery is removed before
assembly or disassembly of any parts.
Assembly tools required (not supplied):- phillips
screwdriver.
Attaching guard and bail handle to trimmer
Warning! Only use with handle and guard properly assembled
to hedge trimmer. The use of the hedge trimmer without
the proper guard or handle provided may result in serious
personal injury.
8
ENGLISH
The trimmer is shipped with the guard and bail handle
attached with a plastic zip tie.
To assemble to trimmer:
u Cut the plastic zip tie.
u Remove the six screws that are partially run into the
trimmer housing (Figure D).
u Slide the guard (5) onto the front of the trimmer housing
as shown in gure E
u Insert two of the six screws into the openings on the sides
of the guard and tighten securely.
u Slide the bail handle (6) onto the front of the trimmer
housing behind the guard as shown in gure F.
u Insert the remaining four screws into the openings on the
sides of the bail handle and tighten securely.
Operation
u To turn the unit on, push the lock off button (2) down,
squeeze the trigger (1), as shown in gure G. Once
the unit is running, you may release the lock-off button.
In order to keep the unit running you must continue to
squeeze the trigger.
u To turn the unit off, release the trigger.
Warning! Never attempt to lock a switch in the on position.
Trimming Instructions
u Maintain proper footing and balance and do not overreach.
Wear safety goggles, non-skid footwear when trimming.
Hold the unit rmly in both hands and turn the unit ON.
Always hold the trimmer, as shown in the illustrations in
this manual, with one hand on the switch handle and one
hand on the bail handle (gure H). Never hold the unit by
the blade guard.
Trimming new growth (Fig. I)
u A wide, sweeping motion, feeding the blade teeth through
the twigs is most effective. A slight downward tilt of the
blade, in the direction of motion gives the best cutting.
Warning! Do not cut stems greater than 19mm.
Use the trimmer only for cutting normal shrubbery around
houses and buildings.
Level hedges (Fig. J)
u To obtain exceptionally level hedges a piece of string can
be stretched along the length of the hedge as a guide.
Side trimming hedges (Fig. K)
u Hold the trimmer as shown and begin at the bottom and
sweep up.
POWERCOMMAND
If you encounter a jam, depress the POWERCOMMAND
button (4) shown in gure l. The blades will move back and
forth in a slower, more forceful rhythm to help cut through
difcult branches. Release the button to return to normal
hedge trimming usage.
Note: Once the button is released, the blades will immediately
return to full speed.
Note: The blades will stop when the button is held for 15
seconds. To reengage the POWERCOMMAND feature,
release the button and depress it again. DO NOT continuously
hold the POWERCOMMAND button during normal hedge
trimming.
Maintenance
Your BLACK+DECKER corded/cordless appliance/tool has
been designed to operate over a long period of time with a
minimum of maintenance. Continuous satisfactory operation
depends upon proper tool care and regular cleaning.
Warning! Before performing any maintenance on corded/
cordless power tools:
u Switch off and unplug the appliance/tool.
u Or switch off and remove the battery from the appliance/
tool if the appliance/tool has a separate battery pack.
u Or run the battery down completely if it is integral and then
switch off.
u Unplug the charger before cleaning it. Your charger does
not require any maintenance apart from regular cleaning.
u Regularly clean the ventilation slots in your appliance/tool/
charger using a soft brush or dry cloth.
u Regularly clean the motor housing using a damp cloth.
Do not use any abrasive or solvent-based cleaner.
u After use, carefully clean the blades. After cleaning, apply
a lm of light machine oil to prevent the blades from
rusting.
The cutting blades are made from high quality, hardened steel
and with normal usage, they will not require resharpening.
However, if you accidentally hit a wire fence, stones, glass or
other hard objects, you may put a nick in the blade. There is
no need to remove this nick as long as it does not interfere
with the movement of the blade.
If it does interfere, remove the battery and use a ne toothed
le or sharpening stone to remove the nick. If you drop the
trimmer, carefully inspect it for damage. If the blade is bent,
housing cracked, or handles broken or if you see any other
condition that may affect the trimmer’s operation contact your
local BLACK+DECKER Service Center for repairs before
putting it back into use. Fertilizers and other garden chemicals
contain agents which greatly accelerate the corrosion of
metals. Do not store the unit on or adjacent to fertilizers or
chemicals. With the battery removed, use only mild soap and
a damp cloth to clean the unit. Never let any liquid get inside
the unit; never immerse any part of the unit into a liquid.
Prevent the blades from rusting by applying a lm of light
machine oil after cleaning.
