Before You Begin
Thank you for choosing the Sony radio!
It will give you many hours of reliable service and listening pleasure.
Before operating the radio, please read these instructions thoroughly and retain
them for future reference.
Features
• Auto Power Off function (approx. 110-130 minutes) — prevents the battery
from being exhausted by the radio being unintentionally left on.
• Noise cut function — reduces interfering noise when reception is poor.
• TUNE indicator lights up when a station is tuned in.
Installing the Batteries
(See Fig. A– )
1 Open the battery compartment lid.
2 Insert two Sony R03 (size AAA) batteries with the 3 and # marks
aligned correctly.
3 Close the battery compartment lid.

When to replace batteries
Replace the batteries when the sound becomes weak or distorted. Replace both
batteries with new ones.
Notes on batteries
• Do not charge dry batteries.
• Do not carry dry batteries together with coins or other metallic objects. It can
generate heat if the positive and negative terminals of the batteries are
accidentally come into contact with metallic objects.
• When you are not going to use the unit for a long time, remove the batteries to
avoid damage from battery leakage and corrosion.
• Do not use different types of batteries at the same time.
• When you replace the batteries, replace all with new ones.
If the radio turns off unexpectedly
The radio turns off automatically to prevent unnecessary wear of the batteries
(Auto Power Off function).
The duration before turning off the radio varies according to the remaining
battery power, but is approximately 110-130 minutes.
If you cannot turn on the radio or the radio turns off immediately after pressing
POWER (Auto power off), the batteries are exhausted. Replace them with new
ones.
Press POWER (Auto power off) again to listen to the radio after it automati-
cally turns off.
To attach the battery compartment lid if it is
accidentally detached (See Fig. A– )
The battery compartment lid is designed to come off when opened with excessive
force. To put it back on, see the illustration.
Improving the Reception
(See Fig. B)
If a nearby cellular phone causes interference (noise), turn off the cellular phone
or move it farther away from the radio.
FM (TV1–3ch) (
): The earphone cord serves as the antenna, so extend it as far
as possible.
Extend the earphone cord as far as possible, even when you listen
via the speaker.
AM ( ): A ferrite bar antenna is built in the radio. Rotate the unit horizontally
for optimum reception.
In vehicles or in buildings, radio reception may be difficult. Try listening near a
window.

Operating the Radio

You can listen to the radio via the speaker or the supplied earphone.
1 Press POWER (Auto power off) to turn on the radio.
2 Select v or 5 using the v/5 (earphone/speaker selector).
3 Select FM (TV1–3*) or AM using BAND.
* Select FM to listen to TV1–3. Received only in Japan.
4 Tune in a desired station using TUNE (Tuning) dial.
The TUNE (tuning) indicator lights up when a station is tuned in.
5 Adjust the volume using VOL.
Notes
• The speaker will not emit sound when v is selected.
• When you listen to FM (TV1-3ch) broadcasts, the earphone cord functions as
the antenna. Extend the earphone cord as far as possible, even when you select
the speaker.
To turn off the radio
Press POWER (Auto Power Off).

Attach the supplied ear pad to the earphone.

Precautions
•Operate the unit only on 3V DC with two R03 (size AAA) batteries.
• Avoid exposure to temperature extremes, direct sunlight, moisture, sand, dust
or mechanical shock. Never leave this unit in a car parked under the sun.
• Should any solid object or liquid fall into the unit, remove the batteries, and
have the unit checked by a qualified personnel before operating it any further.
•In vehicles or buildings, radio reception may be difficult or noisy. Try listening
near a window.
• Since a strong magnet is used for the speakers, keep personal credit cards using
magnetic coding or spring-sound watches away from the unit to prevent
possible damage from the magnet.
• To clean the casing, use a soft cloth dampened with a mild detergent solution.
• This product is not designed to be splash-resistant, so you should take care to
use the unit when raining, snowing or in a water-splash place.
Notes on Earphone
Road safety
Do not use earphone while driving, cycling, or operating any motorized vehicle.
It may create a traffic hazard and is illegal in many areas. It can also be
potentially dangerous to play your earphone at high volume while walking,
especially at pedestrian crossings. You should exercise extreme caution or
discontinue use in potentially hazardous situations.
Preventing hearing damage
Avoid using earphone at high volume.
Hearing experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If you
experience a ringing in your ears, reduce volume or discontinue use.
Caring for others
Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear outside sounds
and to be considerate to people around you.
Warning
If there is lightning when you are using the unit, take off the earphone
immediately.
