Preparations
To Insert batteries A-A
Slide open the battery compartment lid, and insert
two R6 (size AA) dry batteries with correct polarity.
Replace the batteries with new ones when the BATT
indicator dims. A-B
Note
For maximum performance we recommend that you use
Sony alkaline batteries.
To attach the battery compartment lid, if
it is accidentally detached
Attach it as illustrated. A-C
To use external power
Connect the AC power adaptor
AC-E30HG (not supplied) to the
DC IN 3 V jack and to the mains.
Do not use any other AC power
adaptor.
Specifications for AC-E30HG vary for each area.
Check your local voltage and the shape of the plug
before purchasing.
Notes
• Connect the AC power adaptor to an easily accessible
AC outlet. Should you notice an abnormality in the AC
power adaptor, disconnect it from the AC outlet
immediately.
• Do not touch the AC power adaptor with wet hands.
Playing a Tape
1 Insert a cassette.
2 Set (RADIO OFF) TAPE/AM/FM to
(RADIO OFF) TAPE.
3 Press N PLAY.

Note
Do not open the cassette holder while the tape is running.
To use the speaker
Set SPEAKER/i to SPEAKER. The sound will play
from the speaker and no sound from the
headphones/earphones. When the speaker is in use,
the AVLS function will not work.
Listening to the Radio
Since the headphones/earphones cord serves as an
FM antenna, connect the headphones/earphones
even when using the speaker.
1 Set (RADIO OFF) TAPE/AM/FM to AM or
FM.
2 Turn TUNING to tune in to the station you
want.
To turn off the radio
Set (RADIO OFF) TAPE/AM/FM to (RADIO OFF)
TAPE.
To improve broadcast reception B
•For FM: Extend the headphones/earphones cord
(antenna). If the reception is still not good, adjust
FM ST/MONO or DX/LOCAL.
•For AM: Reorient the unit itself.
Recording
Notes
• If the record-protect tab is broken, you cannot record
on that side.
• Use new batteries when recording.
• If a howling occurs, turn down the volume.
• When recording with the microphone, the sound to be
recorded cannot be heard through the speaker.
1 Insert a TYPE I (normal) tape.
2 To record with the built-in microphone:
1 Place the unit on a hard surface (such as
a desk) with the cassette holder side
down, so that the microphone can record
effectively.
2 Set (RADIO OFF) TAPE/AM/FM to
(RADIO OFF) TAPE.
To record from the radio:
1 Set (RADIO OFF) TAPE/AM/FM to AM
or FM.
2 Tune in to the station you want to record
(see “Listening to the Radio”).
3 Press z REC.
N PLAY is pressed simultaneously and
recording starts. The recording level is
automatically adjusted.

To reduce noise while recording AM
programs
Set the ISS (Interference Suppress Switch) to the
position that reduces noise the most.
Notes on recording
• The recording level is fixed.
• Actual recording will start about 2 seconds after you
press z REC. Press z REC about 2 seconds before the
moment you want to start recording, or you will miss
the beginning of your recording.
• Do not use a high-position (TYPE II) or metal (TYPE
IV) tape. If you do, the sound may be distorted when
you play back the tape, or the previous recording may
not be erased completely.
• Do not connect or disconnect the headphones/
earphones to/from the i jack while recording from
the radio. The recording condition may change
abruptly, or noise may be recorded.
• When recording with the microphone, do not place it
near a lamp cord or a fluorescent lamp as this may
cause interference noise.
•No other operation can be done while recording. For
other operations, stop recording first.
To prevent a tape from being accidentally
recorded over
Break off the tabs from side A and/or B. To reuse the
tape for recording, cover the tab hole with adhesive
tape.
Recording from various sound sources
To record with an external microphone
Connect an external microphone to the MIC (PLUG
IN POWER) jack.
Use a microphone such as the ECM-DS70P (not
supplied).
When using a plug-in-power system microphone,
the power to the microphone is supplied from this
unit.
To record from another equipment
Connect another equipment to the MIC (PLUG IN
POWER) jack using such as the RK-G134 connecting
cord (not supplied).
Using Other Functions
(Only when using headphones/earphones)
Protecting your hearing—AVLS
(Automatic Volume Limiter System)
Set AVLS to LIMIT. The maximum volume is kept
down to protect your ears even if you turn the
volume up.
To cancel the AVLS function, set AVLS to NORM.
Listening with powerful sound
Set SOUND BOOST to ON to obtain the Sound Boost
effect which emphasizes both treble and bass.
Note
When you set AVLS to LIMIT, the SOUND BOOST
effect is reduced.
Precautions
On batteries
• Do not carry dry batteries with coins or other metallic objects.
It can generate heat if the positive and negative terminals of the
batteries are accidentally contacted by a metallic object.
• When you are not going to use your Walkman for a long time,
remove the batteries to prevent damage from battery leakage
and corrosion.
On handling
• Do not put any heavy object on top of the unit. The unit may be
damaged.
• Do not leave the unit in a location near heat sources, or in a
place subject to direct sunlight, excessive dust or sand,
moisture, rain, mechanical shock, or in a car with its windows
closed.
•We do not recommend the use of tape longer than 90 minutes.
They are very thin and tend to be stretched easily. This may
cause malfunction of the unit or sound deterioration.
•If the unit has not been used for a long time, set it in the
playback mode to warm it up for a few minutes before you
start using it again.
• Keep personal credit cards using magnetic coding or spring-
wound watches, etc., away from the unit to prevent possible
damage from the magnet used in the speaker.
On headphones/earphones
Road safety
Do not use headphones/earphones while driving, cycling, or
operating any motorized vehicle. It may create a traffic hazard
and is illegal in some areas. It can also be potentially dangerous
to play your headphones/earphones at high volume while
walking, especially at pedestrian crossings.
You should exercise extreme caution or discontinue use in
potentially hazardous situations.
Preventing hearing damage
Do not use headphones/earphones at high volume. Hearing
experts advise against continuous, loud and extended play. If
you experience a ringing in your ears, reduce the volume or
discontinue use.
Caring for others
Keep the volume at a moderate level. This will allow you to hear
outside sounds and to be considerate to the people around you.
On maintenance
•Clean the tape head and tape path using a cotton swab and
commercially available cleaning solvent after every 10 hours of
use.
•To clean the exterior, use a soft cloth slightly moistened in
water. Do not use alcohol, benzine or thinner.
•Clean the headphones/earphones plugs periodically.

스피커를 사용하려면
SPEAKER/i를 SPEAKER로 밀어 놓습니다. 스피커
를 통해서 사운드가 들리고 헤드폰/이어폰에서는 사운드
가 들리지 않습니다. 스피커를 사용하는 동안에는 AVLS
기능은 작동하지 않습니다.
라디오를 듣기
코드가 FM 안테나 역할을 하므로 스피커를 사용하는 경우
에도 헤드폰/이어폰을 연결하여 주십시오.

녹음하기
주의점
• 쓰기 방지 탭이 제거되어 있는 면에는 녹음할 수 없습니다.
• 녹음에는 새 배터리를 사용하여 주십시오.
• 하울링이 발생했을 때에는 음량을 낮추어 주십시오.

AM 프로그램을 녹음할 때 노이즈를 줄이려면
노이즈가 가장 줄어드는 위치에 ISS(장애전파억제 스위
치)를 설정합니다.
녹음에 관한 주의
• 녹음 레벨은 일정합니다.
• 실제 녹음은 z REC를 누른 약 2초 후에 시작됩니다. 녹음을
시작하고 싶은 위치의 약 2초 전에 z REC을 누르지 않으면
처음 부분은 녹음되지 않습니다.
• 하이포지션(TYPE II) 또는 메탈(TYPE IV) 테이프는 사
용하지 마십시오. 테이프를 재생하면 사운드가 왜곡되거나
이전 녹음이 완전이 소거되지 않는 경우가 있습니다.
• 라디오를 녹음하는 동안에 i 단자에서 헤드폰/이어폰을 넣
었다 뺐다 하지 마십시오. 녹음 상태가 갑자기 변경되거나 노
이즈가 녹음되는 경우가 있습니다.
• 마이크로폰으로 녹음할 때에는 간섭이 발생하는 경우가 있으
므로 램프 코드나 형광등 가까이 놓지 마십시오.
• 녹음 중에는 다른 조작을 할 수 없습니다. 그 밖의 조작을 하
려면 우선 녹음을 중지하여 주십시오.
테이프의 녹음 내용을 실수로 소거하지 않으려면
A면 또는 B면 탭을 제거하여 주십시오. 테이프에 다시 녹
음하려면 탭을 제거한 구멍을 셀로판 테이프 등으로 막아
주십시오.
다양한 음원에서 녹음하기
외장 마이크로폰을 사용해서 녹음하기
외장 마이크로폰을 MIC(PLUG IN POWER) 단자에 연
결합니다.
ECM-DS70P(별매품) 등의 마이크로폰을 사용하여 주
십시오.
플러그 인 파워 방식 마이크로폰을 사용하면 마이크로폰의
전원은 본 제품에서 공급됩니다.
다른 기기에서 녹음하기
RK-G134 등의 연결 코드(별매품)를 사용해서 다른 기기
를 MIC(PLUG IN POWER) 단자에 연결합니다.
다른 기능 사용하기(헤드폰/이어폰 사용시)
청력을 보호하기
— AVLS(자동 음량 제한 시스템)
AVLS를 LIMIT로 설정합니다. 최대 음량이 제한되고 음
량을 높여도 청력이 보호됩니다.
AVLS 기능을 취소하려면 AVLS를 NORM으로 설정하
여 주십시오.
박력있는 사운드를 즐기려면
SOUND BOOST를 ON으로 설정해서 고음 및 저음 양쪽
모두 강조할 수 있는 사운드 부스트 효과를 켜 주십시오.
주의점
AVLS를 LIMIT로 설정하면 SOUND BOOST 효과가 약해
집니다.
사용상의 주의
배터리에 대하여
• 건전지는 동전 등의 금속과 함께 휴대하지 마십시오. 금속에 의하여
배터리 양극과 음극이 접촉되면 발열될 염려가 있습니다.
• Walkman을 장기간 사용하지 않을 때에는 배터리의 누액에 의한 부
식을 방지하기 위하여 배터리를 꺼내 놓으십시오.
취급에 대하여
• 본 기기에 충격을 가하거나 떨어뜨리면 고장의 원인이 되므로 주의하
십시오.
• 본 기기는 난방기구 가까이, 직사광선이 닿거나 또는 먼지나 모래가
많은 장소, 습도가 높거나 비가 튀는 장소, 진동이 심한 장소, 창문을
꼭 닫은 자동차 안 등에 방치하지 마십시오.
• 90분을 초과하는 테이프는 사용하지 마실 것을 권장합니다. 매우 얇
게 늘어나기 쉽습니다. 본체의 고장이나 음질이 저하되는 원인이 되는
경우가 있습니다.
• 장기간 본 제품을 사용하지 않았을 때에는 재생 모드로 몇 분 동안 워
밍업한 후에 사용하십시오.
• 스피커에 사용된 자석으로 인한 손상을 방지하기 위해서 자기 코드가
있는 신용 카드나 손목 시계 등은 본 기기 가까이 놓지 마십시오.
헤드폰/이어폰에 대하여
교통안전에 대하여
자전거나 오토바이 또는 자동차 운전 중에는 헤드폰/이어폰을 사용하지
마십시오. 교통사고의 위험이 있을 뿐만 아니라 일부 지역에서는 법률로
금지되어 있습니다. 또 보행 중이라도 횡단보도에서는 헤드폰/이어폰을
높은 음량으로 사용하는 것은 위험한 경우가 있습니다. 위험하다고 판단
되는 경우에는 특히 주의하거나 사용을 중지하십시오.
청각장애를 방지하기
높은 음량으로 헤드폰/이어폰을 사용하지 마십시오. 의사는 높은 음량
으로 장시간 계속해서 사용하지 말도록 경고하고 있습니다. 귀가 울릴
때에는 음량을 낮추거나 사용을 중지하여 주십시오.
주위의 분들게 배려를
적절한 음량으로 즐겨 주십시오. 주위의 소리가 들릴 뿐만 아니라 주위
사람들에게 폐도 끼치지 않게 됩니다.
손질법에 대하여
• 10시간 사용할 때마다 면봉과 시판용 클리닝액을 사용해서 테이프 헤
드 및 테이프 주행로를 클리닝하여 주십시오.
• 본체 표면을 청소할 때에는 물로 살짝 적신 부드러운 헝겊을 사용하십
시오. 알코올이나 벤젠, 시너는 사용하지 마십시오.
• 헤드폰/이어폰 및 리모컨용 플러그는 정기적으로 청소하여 주십시오.
