1 General safety notes
1.1 Safety notes
Read the operating instructions before commissioning.
Connection, mounting, and setting may only be performed by skilled per‐
son.
2006/42/EC
NO
SAFETY
Not a safety component in accordance with the EU Machinery Directive.
When commissioning, protect the device from moisture and contamination.
These operating instructions contain information required during the life cycle of
the sensor.
2 Notes on UL approval
The device must be supplied by a Class 2 source of supply.
UL Environmental Rating: Enclosure type 1
3 Correct use
The WL34 is an opto-electronic photoelectric retro-reflective sensor (referred to as "sen‐
sor" in the following) for the optical, non-contact detection of objects, animals, and per‐
sons. A reflector is required for this product to function. If the product is used for any
other purpose or modified in any way, any warranty claim against SICK AG shall become
void.

5 Mounting
Mount the sensor and the reflector using suitable mounting brackets (see the SICK
range of accessories). Align the sensor and reflector with each other.
Note the sensor’s maximum permissible tightening torque of 2 Nm.
6 Electrical installation
The sensors must be connected in a voltage-free state. The following information must
be observed, depending on the connection type:
Plug connection: note pin assignment: when the cover is open, the male connector
can be swiveled horizontally and vertically.
Terminal connection: note the permissible cable diameter of 5 to 10 mm. When
the cover is open, the M16 fitting can be swiveled horizontally and vertically.
Unscrew the M16 fitting and remove sealing plug. Lead voltage-free supply cable
through and connect sensor in accordance with table 2 and table 4. Retighten
M16 fitting with seal so that the IP enclosure rating of the device is ensured.
Figure 1: Opening the sensor Figure 2: Electrical connection
Only apply voltage/switch on the power supply once all electrical connections have
been established.

7 Additional functions
Alarm
Alarm output: the sensor (WL34-Vxxx) features a pre-failure notification output (“Alarm”
in connection diagram [see "WL34-Bxxx, WL34-Vxxx", page 7]), which issues a notifica‐
tion if the sensor is only ready for operation to a limited extent. The LED indicator
flashes in this case. Possible causes: sensor or reflector is contaminated, sensor is out
of alignment. In the good state: LOW (0), if excessively contaminated HIGH (1).

Test input
Test input: the WL34-B / -V sensors feature a test input (“TI” or “Test” on the connec‐
tion diagram [see "WL34-Bxxx, WL34-Vxxx", page 7 and see table 7]), which can be
used to switch the sender off and, therefore, check that the sensor is functioning cor‐
rectly: if female cable connectors with LED indicators are used, you have to ensure that
the TI is assigned accordingly.
There must be no object between the sensor and reflector; activate the test input (see
the connection diagram [see "WL34-Bxxx, WL34-Vxxx", page 7 and see table 7], TE at
0 V for PNP) (PNP: TE M; NPN: TE L+). The send LED is shut down or the detection
of an object is simulated. Use the following table to check the function. If the switching
output fails to behave in accordance with the following table, check the application con‐
ditions. See section Fault diagnosis.

8 Commissioning
1 Alignment
Align the sensor with a suitable reflector. Select the position so that the red emitted light
beam hits the center of the reflector. The sensor must have a clear view of the reflector,
with no object in the path of the beam [see figure 3 and figure 4]. You must ensure that the
optical openings of the sensor and reflector are completely clear.

3 Sensitivity setting
Sensor with potentiometer: open the sensor cover and protective hood, make sure that no
dirt has gotten into the device.
The sensitivity is adjusted with the potentiometer (type: without stop). Clockwise rotation:
operating reserve increased; counterclockwise rotation: operating reserve reduced. We rec‐
ommend setting the potentiometer to “Maximum”. A lower operating reserve may be nec‐
essary for depolarizing surfaces.
The sensor is adjusted and ready for operation.
4 Time function setting
WL34xx4x: no time delay, t1 = time delay, t2 = time delay; for -R: 0 = relay deactivated, 1 =
relay active. Time delay selector switch can be set on the device according to the following
graphic.
Time stages: 0.5 ... 10 s can be adjusted.

Disposal of batteries, electric and electronic devices
According to international directives, batteries, accumulators and electrical or
electronic devices must not be disposed of in general waste.
The owner is obliged by law to return this devices at the end of their life to the
respective public collection points.
This symbol on the product, its package or in this document, indicates
that a product is subject to these regulations.
12 Maintenance
SICK sensors are maintenance-free.
We recommend doing the following regularly:
Clean the external lens surfaces
Check the screw connections and plug-in connections
No modifications may be made to devices.

18 Montage
Sensor und Reflektor an geeignete Befestigungswinkel montieren (siehe SICK-Zubehör-
Programm).
bzw. einschalten.
