zGetting Started
Preparing a Power
Source
Main unit
Slide and open the battery
compartment lid, and insert two
R6 (size AA) dry batteries
(supplied) with correct polarity.
Tuner-remote control (FK2 only)
Insert one R03 (size AAA) battery
(not supplied) when using the
tuner-remote control separately as
a radio.
Slide and open the battery
compartment lid and insert the
battery with correct polarity.
When to replace the
batteries
Main unit: When the battery
weakens, tape playback will
become unstable and noisy and the
BATT lamp will dim (for FK2, only
when playing a tape). Radio
reception will become weak or
distorted (FK2 only). Replace the
batteries with new ones.
Tuner-remote control (FK2 only):
Replace the battery when radio
reception becomes weak or
distorted.

Notes
• The battery life may shorten
depending on the operation of the
unit.
• When using the tuner-remote
control attached to the main unit,
you do not need to install the battery
in the remote control.
For maximum performance we
recommend that you use alkaline
batteries.
If the battery compartment lid
comes off
Attach it as shown in the illustrations
in the Japanese manual.
To wear on your belt
Main unit
With the supplied belt clip, you
can wear your Walkman on a belt
for convenient use.
Remote control
Attach the supplied key holder
hook to the remote control so that
you can wear it on your belt.

Listening to the
Radio
(FK2 only)
When using the tuner-remote
control attached to the main unit,
you do not need to install the
battery in the remote control.
1 Set TAPE/RADIO to RADIO to
turn on the radio.
2 Slide BAND to select FM or
AM.
When listening to stereo
broadcast
Set BAND to FM ST (stereo).
Set it to FM MONO (monaural)
when reception is poor.
AM broadcasts are received
only in monaural.
3 Turn the tune dial to select a
station. Adjust the volume with
VOL.
The radio volume can only be
adjusted on the remote control.
Note that the volume cannot be
completely turned down.
To turn off the radio
Set TAPE/RADIO to TAPE.
To improve reception
For FM: The headphones cord and
the remote control cord act as the
antenna. Use them stretched for
better reception.
For AM: An antenna is built into
the tuner-remote control. Turn
around or adjust the position of
the remote control for optimum
reception.
Notes
• Tape operation is deactivated when
TAPE/RADIO is set to RADIO.
• Reception may become poor if the
tuner-remote control is used near
other radios, television sets,
computers, etc. Use it away from
such equipment.
Connecting the
Headphones
1 Connect the stereo mini plug
firmly to the remote control.
2 (FK2 only) Connect the remote
control cord firmly to the
remote control.
3 Connect the remote control to

4 Wear the “L” marked side to
the left ear and the “R” marked
side to the right ear.
If the headphones do not fit to
your ears or the sound is
unbalanced, adjust the
headphones to fit to your ears
firmly (See the illustration in
the Japanese manual).
z Operating the
Walkman
Playing a Tape
1 Open the cassette holder and
insert a cassette.
2 Set the TAPE selector to select
NORM or CrO2/METAL to
match the tape type.
3 Make sure the HOLD function
is turned off.
If it is on, slide the HOLD
switch to turn it off.
4 (FK2 only) Set TAPE/RADIO
to TAPE.
5 Press œ (play) to start playing
then adjust the volume.
When adjusting the volume on
the Walkman
Set the VOL control on the remote
control at maximum.
When adjusting the volume on
the remote control
Set the VOL control on the Walkman
slightly above the appropriate level.
Note on the cassette holder
When opening the cassette holder,
make sure the BATT lamp is turned
off, then slide the OPEN switch.
If the cassette holder is opened when
the BATT lamp is on, the tape may
loosen and be damaged.
Note on the TAPE/RADIO selector
(FK2 only)
If the TAPE/RADIO switch is set to
RADIO, tape operation is deactivated
both from the main unit and the
remote control.

To use the tuner-remote
control separately
The tuner-remote control can be
used individually as a radio when
disconnected from the main unit.
In this case, insert a battery in the
remote control as described in
“Preparing a Power Source”.
Note
• When the tuner-remote control is
connected to the main unit, the
power will be supplied from the
main unit even when a battery is
installed in the remote control.
Using Other
Functions
To play a tape recorded
with Dolby* NR system
Set DOLBY NR to ON.
* Dolby noise reduction manufactured
under license from Dolby
Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
“DOLBY” and the double-D symbol
a are trademarks of Dolby
Laboratories Licensing Corporation.
To lock the controls
Set the HOLD switch to the
direction of the arrow to lock the
controls.
Note (FK2 only)
The HOLD function applies only to
tape operations; it does not lock the
radio operation buttons.
To emphasize bass sound
To emphasize deep bass sound, set
the SOUND switch to MEGA
BASS. To emphasize deeper bass
sound, set the switch to GROOVE.
Notes
• If the sound is distorted when set to
GROOVE, set to MEGA BASS or
NORMAL.
• Bass emphasis may not show great
effect if the volume is turned up.
To protect your hearing—
AVLS (Automatic Volume
Limiter System) function
Set AVLS (Automatic Volume
Limiter System) to LIMIT. The
maximum volume is kept down to
protect your ears, even if you turn
the volume up.
To cancel the AVLS function, set
AVLS to NORM.
Note
• If the sound is distorted when you
listen to the bass-boosted sound
with the AVLS, turn down the
volume.
